Former Swiss Banker Gives Data to WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks' editor Julian Assange has hinted that the next information dump from his whistle-blowing site could deal with a U.S. bank. Now a former Swiss bank executive Rudold M. Elmer has claimed to have given Assange details about illegal activities of more than 2,000 high-profile individuals, the The Guardian's Observer is reporting.
Elmer oversaw the Caribbean branch of Swiss bank Julius Baer for eight years until he was dismissed in 2002. The former banker presented documents on two discs to Assange at the Frontline Club in London on Monday, before he returns to his native Switzerland to stand trial. He's accused of breaking secrecy laws of Switzerland's notoriously clandestine banks, falsifying documents, and threatening two Julius Baer officials.
"The aim of [Elmer's] activities was, and is, to discredit Julius Baer as well as clients in the eyes of the public," said a statement Julius Baer issued Friday. "With this goal in mind, Mr. Elmer spreads baseless accusations and passed on unlawfully acquired, respectively retained, documents to the media, and later also to WikiLeaks. To back up his campaign, he also used falsified documents."
In the past, Elmer leaked financial documents to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). With WikiLeaks, he said he hopes to "educate society" about a corrupt financial system.
The documents Elmer has handed over to WikiLeaks detail the activities of "high net worth individuals" and corporations, including "approximately 40 politicians." Elmer said that the people implicated in the documents hail from "the U.S., Britain, Germany, Austria, and Asia – from all over" and they hold various occupations.
"What I am objecting to is not one particular bank, but a system of structures," Elmer told theObserver. "I have worked for major banks other than Julius Baer, and the one thing on which I am absolutely clear is that the banks know, and the big boys know, that money is being secreted away for tax-evasion purposes, and other things such as money-laundering – although these cases involve tax evasion."
Assange said that WikiLeaks will verify the information that Elmer ceded to the organization, and that the leak could be released within the next two weeks. However, the names of those implicated in the documents will not be made public.
Assange is facing legal troubles of his own, stemming from rape charges filed in Sweden by two former WikiLeaks volunteers. Currently free on bail in London, he will appear in court early next month for an extradition hearing.
The U.S. government is also pursuing legal action against the 39-year-old Australian for his part in WikiLeaks' publishing of more than 250,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

ASML Reports Surge in Profit

ASML Holding NV (ASML.AE) Wednesday ushered in the European technology earnings season with record results that beat market expectations and said it plans to double its dividend and launch a share buyback.
ASML, the world's largest maker of lithography systems that map out electronic circuits on silicon wafers, said net profit for the quarter ended Dec. 31 rose sharply to €406.8 million from €50.5 million a year earlier, while sales rose to €1.52 billion from €581 million.
The Veldhoven, Netherlands-based company booked orders valued at €2.32 billion in the period, bringing its order backlog to an all-time high of €3.86 billion.
ASML's performance builds on the recent strong performance of the broader technology segment. Late Tuesday, Apple Inc. said its fiscal first-quarter profit surged 78% on the success of its iPhone and Mac computers. Earlier this month chip giant Intel Corp., one of ASML's most important customers, said it continued to benefit from strong demand from corporate customers and expects 2011 revenue to rise about 10% annually amid strong growth in server demand and from emerging markets.
"The fourth quarter was a strong close to a remarkable year in the history of ASML during which we achieved record sales, profit and bookings," said ASML's Chief Executive Eric Meurice.
"This record-breaking backlog and the additional expected first-quarter bookings in 2011 confirm a potential for more than €5 billion of net sales in 2011," he said.
For the current first quarter ASML expects sales of around €1.4 billion and a gross margin of between 44% and 45%. As a result, ASML said it intends to double its dividend payout to €0.40 a share and intends to buy back shares for a value up to €1 billion within two years.

Cricket World Cup 2011 Ashwin and Chawla in WC squad Rohit, Sreesanth and Ojha left out of India's 15-man list

The exclusion of middle-order batsman Rohit Sharmawas the surprise in India's 15-man World Cup squad announced in Chennai. The other bone of contention had been the second specialist spinner's slot, and the selectors have picked both offspinner R Ashwin and legspinner Piyush Chawla, ahead of left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. Most of the other names in the squad were along expected lines.
India's major concern ahead of the team selection was the injuries to four first-choice players - Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and quick bowler Praveen Kumar - but the selectors picked all four, confident that they will be fit in time for the tournament which starts on February 19.
India's bowling attack for the World Cup will be significantly different from their standard Test attack, with only Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh being named. The fast bowling pair of Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma, and Ojha are all excluded while Munaf Patel, who helped India to a series-levelling victory over South Africa on Saturday, has found a place as the fourth seamer.
The selectors have gone in for a well-stocked slow bowling department, expecting traditional subcontinent tracks for the World Cup. Besides Harbhajan, there are two specialists in Ashwin and Chawla, an allrounder in Yusuf Pathan besides the part-time offerings of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Virender Sehwag.
Chawla was also something of a surprise pick, though he is part of the one-day squad currently touring South Africa. He hasn't played any one-dayers for India since the Asia Cup in July 2008, and none of his 21 ODIs have been at home.
Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla, R Ashwin

Ehud Barak, 4 other Knesset members to leave Labor party

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and four other members of Israel's parliament, the Knesset, are leaving the Labor faction and forming a new, independent faction, according to a letter from the break-away members dated Monday.
Barak, Matan Vilnai, Einat Wilf, Orit Noked and Shalom Simchon said "the new independent faction will be a centrist Zionist and democratic faction and will advance these ideas in the Knesset and the coalition, and in the future in public by setting up a new party."
The letter added: "For a long time many of the Labour faction members act as if they do not see themselves as members of the faction. They refuse to accept the authority of the chosen chairman and they speak and act against decision to be a part of the coalition. For a long time the members of the faction, and lately members of the government have allowed themselves to act and speak strongly against the party, the faction the chairman and the government while they continue to be party members faction and government members. These statements were used by non-party voters to harm and weaken the party."
The new faction is not yet considered a new party until it registers and meets various legal and administrative requirements.

Personal life

Barak was born on 12 February 1942 in kibbutz Mishmar HaSharon in Palestine, the eldest of four sons of Esther (née Godin) and Yisrael Brog. His paternal grandparents, Frieda and Reuven Brog, were murdered in Pušalotas (Pushelat) in the northern Lithuania (then ruled by Russian Empire) in 1912, leaving his father orphaned at the age of two. Barak's maternal grandparents, Elka and Shmuel Godin, died at the Treblinka extermination camp during the Holocaust.
Ehud hebraized his family name from "Brog" to "Barak" in 1959, when he joined the IDF. It was during his military service that he met his future wife, Nava (née Cohen). They had three daughters together. Barak divorced Nava in August 2003. On 30 July 2007 Barak married Nili Priel in a small ceremony in his private residence.
Education
Barak earned his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1968, and his master's degree in engineering-economic systems in 1978 from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
Military service

Barak joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1959. He served in the IDF for 35 years, rising to the position of Chief of the General Staff and the rank of Rav Aluf, the highest in the Israeli military. During the Yom Kippur War, Barak commanded an improvised regiment of tanks which among other things, helped rescue paratrooper battalion 890 commanded by Yitzhak Mordechai who were suffering heavy losses in the Battle of the Chinese Farm.

Ehud Barak with Legion of Merit
During his service as a commando in the elite Sayeret Matkal, Barak led several highly acclaimed operations, such as: "Operation Isotope", the rescue mission to free the hostages onboard Sabena Flight 571 at Lod Airport in 1972; the 1973 covert mission Operation Spring of Youth in Beirut, in which he was disguised as a woman in order to assassinate members of the Palestine Liberation Organization; Barak was also a key architect of the June 1976 Operation Entebbe, another rescue mission to free the hostages of the Air France aircraft hijacked by terrorists and forced to land at the Entebbe Airport in Uganda. These highly acclaimed operations, along with Operation Bayonet led to the dismantling of Palestinian terrorist cell Black September. It has been alluded that Barak also masterminded the Tunis Raid on April 16, 1988, in which PLO leader Abu Jihad was assassinated.
Later he served as head of Aman, the Military Intelligence Directorate (1983–1985), head of Central Command (1986–1987) and Deputy Chief of the General Staff (1987–1991). He served as Chief of the General Staff between 1 April 1991 and 1 January 1995. During this period he implemented the first Oslo Accords and participated in the negotiations towards the Israel-Jordan Treaty of Peace.
Barak was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service and four Chief of Staff citations (Tzalash HaRamatkal) for courage and operational excellence. These five decorations make him the most decorated soldier in Israeli history (jointly with close friend Nechemiah Cohen). In 1992 he was also awarded the Legion of Merit (Commander) by the United States.
Barak is also an expert in krav maga, the official martial art of the Israeli Defense Forces.

Political career

On 7 July 1995 Barak was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs by Yitzhak Rabin. When Shimon Peres formed a new government following Rabin's assassination in November 1995, Barak was made Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995–1996). He was elected to the Knesset on the Labor Party list in 1996, and served as a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Following internal elections after Peres' defeat in the election for Prime Minister in 1996, Barak became the leader of the Labor Party.
Prime Minister of Israel
In the 1999 Prime Ministerial election, Barak beat Binyamin Netanyahu by a wide margin. However, he sparked controversy by deciding to form a coalition with the ultra-Orthodox party Shas, who had won an unprecedented 17 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. Shas grudgingly agreed to Barak's terms that they eject their leader Aryeh Deri, a convicted felon, and enact reform to "clean up" in-party corruption. Consequentially, the left wing Meretz party quit the coalition after they failed to agree on the powers to be given to a Shas deputy minister in the Ministry of Education.
In 1999 Barak gave a campaign promise to end Israel's 22-year long occupation of Southern Lebanon within a year. On 24 May 2000 Israel withdrew from Southern Lebanon. On 7 October, three Israeli soldiers were captured by Hezbollah and subsequently killed. The bodies of these soldiers, along with the living Elhanan Tenenbaum, were eventually exchanged for Lebanese captives in 2004. Barak inaugurated peace negotiations with the PLO, which ultimately proved unfruitful. As part of these negotiations, Barak took part in the Camp David 2000 Summit which was meant to finally resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but failed. Barak also allowed Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami to attend the Taba Summit with the leadership of the Palestinian Authority, after his government had fallen.
Domestic Issues
Barak was in power during the appointment of the Tal committee which dealt with the controversial issue of ultra-Orthodox Jews' exemption from military service. Riots in October 2000 led to the killing of twelve Israeli-Arabs and one Palestinian by Israel Police and one Jewish civilian by Israeli Arabs.
Resignation
In 2001 Barak called a special election for Prime Minister. In the contest, he was defeated by Likud leader Ariel Sharon, and subsequently resigned as Labor leader and from the Knesset. He left Israel to work as a senior advisor with United States-based Electronic Data Systems. He also partnered with a private equity company focused on "security-related" work.
Return to politics
In 2005, Barak announced his return to Israeli politics, and ran for leadership of the Labor Party in November. However, in light of his weak poll showings, Barak dropped out of the race early and declared his support for veteran statesman Shimon Peres. Following his failed attempt to maintain leadership of the Labor party, Barak became a partner of the investment company SCP Private Equity Partners, Pennsylvania. He also established a company "Ehud Barak Limited" which is thought to have made over NIS 30 million.
After Peres lost the race to Amir Peretz and left the Labor party, Barak announced he would stay at the party, despite his shaky relationship with its newly elected leader. He declared, however, that he would not run for a spot on the Labor party's Knesset list for the March 2006 elections. Barak's attempt to return to a prominent role in Israel politics seemed to have failed. However, Peretz's hold on the Labor leadership proved unexpectedly shaky as he was badly damaged by negative views of his performance as Defense Minister during the 2006 Lebanon War, which was seen as something less than a success in Israel.
In January 2007 Barak launched a bid to recapture the leadership of the Labor party in a letter acknowledging "mistakes" and "inexperience" during his tenure as Prime Minister. In early March 2007, a poll of Labor Party primary voters put Barak ahead of all other opponents, including Peretz. In the first round of voting, on 28 May 2007, he gained 39% of the votes, more than his two closest rivals, but not enough to win the election.
As a result, Barak faced a runoff against the second-place finisher, Ami Ayalon, on June 12, 2007, which he won by a narrow margin.
Barak has been critical of what he sees as racist sentiments that have recently been expressed by some Israeli rabbis and rebbetzins; he views such statements as a threat to Israeli unity and that they may lead Israeli society into a "dark and dangerous place".
Defense Minister

Ehud Barak and Condoleezza Rice
After winning back the leadership of the Labor party, Barak was sworn in as Minister of Defense on 18 June 2007, as part of Prime Minister Olmert's cabinet reshuffle. However on 1 July 2007, Barak led a successful effort in the Labor central committee to stipulate that Labor would leave the government coalition if Olmert did not resign by September or October 2007. At that time the Winograd Commission would publish its final report on the performance of the Israel Defense Forces and its civilian leadership. The preliminary Winograd report released earlier this year laid most of the blame on Olmert for poorly planning, executing, and reviewing war strategies in the 2006 conflict against Hezbollah.
During December 2008 through January 2009, Barak led (as defense minister) Operation Cast Lead.
Labor won only 13 out of the 120 Knesset seats in the 2009 elections, making them the fourth largest party. Barak and other Labor officials initially stated they would not take part in the next government. However, over the objections of some in the Labor party, Barak later reached an agreement under which Labor joined the governing coalition. Barak retained his position as Defense Minister.

Silent Witness star Emilia Fox shows off her incredibly flat stomach on beach holiday just TWO MONTHS after giving birth

She gave birth to daughter Rose just two months ago, but actress Emilia Fox has already regained her pre-pregnancy figure.
The 36-year-old actress showed off her flat stomach and enviable curves on a beach holiday in Barbados with partner Jeremy Gilley and little Rose.
Wearing a pretty maroon and black polka dot bikini, Silent Witness star Emilia looked toned as she enjoyed a dip in the warm sea.

But Emilia came across some trouble when the strap of her halterneck bikini snapped and she nearly lost her top after she was caught by a particularly strong wave.
However, after sorting out her swimwear, Emilia later got back in the sea for a wakeboarding experience with Jeremy.
Looking delighted as she was pulled along the water, Emilia looked confident and excited while maintaining her balance on the board.

Emilia isn't the only British star to escape the cold British weather with a sunshine break on the Caribbean island.
Those who have also enjoyed a break in Barbados in recent weeks include Simon Cowell and former X Factor star Lucie Jones.
Emilia, who plays Dr Nikki Alexander in hit BBC show Silent Witness, recently said despite only recently having given birth to baby Rose, she is already keen to add to her brood.

After hearing the news that Victoria and David Beckham are expecting a fourth child, Emilia said: 'I want many more babies. Having done it once I want to do it again and again and again.
'I had such a great time in labour, it was quite an extraordinary experience with a wonderful midwife. It was very painful at the time but as soon as the baby was out it was great.'
But while Emilia is keen to extend her family with Jeremy, she has very specific ideas of what career her children should follow, and is hopeful Rose won't follow her into the acting industry.

Emilia was pregnant while filming the current series of Silent Witness, but she says she hopes her daughter picked up more of the medical terminology while in the womb than the acting side.
She said: 'Apparently babies can hear in the womb, so I just hope that the baby's been picking up on the pathology and not the fun of acting and that she'll head straight to medical school.'
Acting is in the genes, however. Emilia was born into an acting dynasty - her mother is Joanna David, her father Edward Fox, and her cousin Laurence Fox is the star of Lewis and husband of actress Billie Piper.
Brother Freddie is just beginning to spread his acting wings, with roles in Any Human Heart and Worried About The Boy.
Family plans: Emilia and Jeremy last year. They are now parents to two-month-old daughter Rose

Blue Monday: Today is the most depressing of the year

A combination of factors, including post-Christmas debt and sullen British weather, make today the most depressing of the year
If you were feeling a little gloomy when you woke up this morning, don't be too alarmed - today is statistically the most depressing day of the year.
A combination of factors, including post-Christmas debt and sullen British weather, make today worse than any other day, say psychologists.
The annual mood-killer, dubbed 'Blue Monday', tends to fall on the third Monday of January as the New Year cheer wears off and the comforting warmth of summer seems like a very distant prospect.
The top three techniques which work best to lift your mood on this most miserable of days are: helping someone in need, receiving a compliment out of the blue and listening to the sound of the sea, according to a survey commissioned by charity ActionAid.
The charity is hosting a 'Happy Bubble' in London's Finsbury Avenue Square today to help beat the blues.
Two giant, heated bubbles will be filled with space hoppers, and free massages and other fun items will be free for the public between 7am - 7pm.

Three spinners in India's World Cup squad, Rohit Sharma dropped

India included three spinners and dropped Rohit Sharma in their final 15-member squad for the ICC cricket World Cup selected by the five-member selection panel led by K Srikanth in Chennai on Monday.

The list of 30 probables were pruned to half and no big star is left out of the final squad for the mega-event starting February 19.

The top-seven of the Indian batting-order -- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni -- are in the team as expected and Yusuf Pathan take the all-rounder's berth.

The inspirational Zaheer Khan lead the pace attack and his pacer partners will be the trio of Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar. S Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma failed to make the cut.

Harbhajan Singh will spearhead the slow bowling department with Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin as his spin partner. Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha were also vying for the slot.

Just a day before the selection meeting, doubts have arisen over Sachin Tendulkar's availability after he pulled out of the remainder of the ODI series in South Africa as a precautionary measure after sustaining a hamstring injury during Saturday's second match.

But going by indications, the injury is not serious and Tendulkar will be making his sixth World Cup appearance.

Teresa Scanlan wins Miss America 2011; Miss Nebraska slams WikiLeaks during pageant

Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan has at age 17 become the youngest Miss America to win the pageant since its debut 90 years ago.
Becoming the first Cornhusker State resident to win the crown, Scanlan beat out 52 other beauty queens to win a $50,000 scholarship at the Planet Hollywood casino-resort in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Scanlan won over the seven judges after strutting down the stage in a black bikini and playing "White Water Chopped Sticks" at the piano.
The blond teen told the Associated Press she plans to register to vote when she turns 18 next month and will defer her enrollment at Virginia's Patrick Henry College to complete her reign.
She then plans to go to law school and eventually become a politician and "stand up for what's right, stand up for integrity and honesty.
"At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry and I really think it's important for people who have their heart and mind in the right place get into those powerful positions," she told the AP.

On Saturday night, she spoke out about national security in response to a question about the WikiLeaks scandal.
"You know when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly," she said.
Scanlan, whose platform issue was eating disorders, said she "never passed up a cookie" while traveling to the pageant.
She is reportedly the youngest Miss America to win since the 90-year-old pageant put in age limits in 1938 (though in 1921, its first year, the pageant crowned 15-year-old Margaret Gorman from District of Columbia queen).
"From 17 to 24, that can be a huge age range," Scanlan told the AP. "But with these girls, they are all at the highest level imaginable."
Among them was Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady, who as first runner-up won $25,000. Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier came in third place and won $20,000.
